Road side pickup this morning on Highway 19 east of Cannon Falls. A great team of Bonnie Lodermeir, Chuck Schwartzoff, Glenn Christian, Dick Peterson, John Wegmann, Joe Coyle, and Bob Shepard, led by Ryan Schramm. It was pretty light pick up but John found a $100 bill that might not be real. John is a good guy to check it out.

Nicole Miller, the new librarian at the Cannon Falls Library (cannonfalls.lib.mn.us) was our guest speaker today. Nicole previously served as librarian in Gilbert, MN. She and her daughter moved to our community this summer. Among the facts she shared with us about the library was in the past year 83,000 items have circulated, 4,000 people have used the library and they have 30,000 items to barrow. Did you know you can check out puppets at the library?

Sylvia Allen was our speaker this week. She shared an amazing story of helping orphans in Uganda.

In 2003, Sylvia Allen went with a non-profit organization on a humanitarian trip to Uganda, Africa. While she was there, she was asked by Geofrey Kawuma, head of the Mbiriizi Primary School, to be the school’s Grandmother. With 1,000 children in the school, of which 250 are orphans due to the AIDS crisis, she was honored to accept the responsibility. Out of this Sylvia’s Children was born, Inc., a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to improving the lives of her ‘grandchildren’; to give the children a fighting chance.

Her presentation description – “You’re an orphan --- you live in the village of Mbirizi, Uganda, Africa --- your parents have died. Who will take care of you? ----With Sylvia’s Children the orphans attending the Mbirizi Advanced Primary School have a safety net.” sylviaschildren.com Sylvia, a member of the Rotary Club of North St. Paul-Maplewood- Oakdale, has raised over $1,000,000 to fund this effort which she founded it in 2003.
