The Cannon Falls Rotary Club, in partnership with the United Way for Goodhue, Wabasha, and Pierce Counties, continues to administer a growing Packing for the Weekend food distribution program to help families in need which include school-age children in the Cannon Falls education district.
Implemented in January of 2012 with initial funding provided by the Cannon Falls Rotary Foundation, Packing for the Weekend is designed to provide qualifying families with a backpack full of balanced and supplements each weekend. The program was modeled after a similar program in the Red Wing school system, which had been piloted by the United Way. The program was originally implemented in the Cannon Falls Elementary School, and has since been expanded to include the Middle School.
The Cannon Falls Rotary Club, with weekly volunteer assistance from a variety of different local organizations, continues to administer the program, which currently is supporting 32 area families and 75 children. Ongoing funding for the program is now provided by the local United Way, which is now in the process of wrapping up its annual fund campaign. At present, 22.4 percent of the children in the Cannon Falls school system qualify for free or reduced-cost meals at school. The Packing for the Weekend program is intended to make sure those children have nutritious meal options at home during the weekends.
Cannon Falls area residents wishing to support the Packing for the Weekend program may do so by making a designated gift to the United Way campaign. Any contributions designated for Packing for the Weekend in Cannon Falls will be used in direct support of the local program. In addition to the Packing for the Weekend program in Cannon Falls, the local United Way funds a number of other programs relied upon by Cannon Falls residents, including providing scholarship assistance for pre-school education available through the Cannon Falls school system.
This year’s Annual Campaign goal for the United Way is $410,000. The United Way for Goodhue, Wabasha and Pierce Counties currently supports more than 30 non-profit agencies throughout its service area with grant funding and capacity-building initiatives.
